There are many ways to get high without drugs, such as…
- Frogs. In 2007, a Kansas City man was arrested for possession of a Colorado River Toad. He had been extracting and drying to toad’s venom, which contains Bufotenine, a hallucinogenic.
- Poop. A story in the New York Times in 1998 revealed that street children in Zambia were getting high off of Jenkem, the fumes of fermented human feces.
- Fish. In the south of France in 2006, two men were hospitalized after consuming Sarpa Salpa, a fish that can produce psychotropic effects if the head is eaten. One of these men hallucinated for 36 hours.
- Nutmeg. In the United States, some teens have tried getting high using the spice nutmeg. It is said to produce mild hallucinations and a warm feeling in the limbs. But it also leads to nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, sometimes terrifying hallucinations, and a horrific hangover.
- Cheese. A 2005 British sleep study revealed that 75%-85% of all participants reported seeing odd images and visions after ingesting 20 grams of Stilton cheese.
- Surrogate alcohol. Due to rising liquor prices, Russia has recently seen an increase in surrogate alcohol abuse. In other words, people are drinking things like 97% alcohol aftershave to get drunk.
- Fuel. In Kenya, a common homemade alcohol called Changaa is often cut with jet fuel to increase the buzz it provides. Even more horrifyingly, some Kenyans swear by Kiroro to catch a buzz - that’s just straight jet fuel.
- Salamanders. Non-commercially produced in Slovenia by means of horrific animal cruelty, Salamander Brandy infuses traditional brandy with the venom salamanders use to defend themselves. It is said to produce a high akin to LSD and ecstasy combined.
- Ketchup. In prisons the world over, inmates get hammered on Pruno, a stomach curdling alcoholic concoction made from fermented fruit, sugar packets, and ketchup.
- Copper formaldehyde. 22 men in Pakistan died of copper formaldehyde poisoning in 2007 after consuming Tharra, a homemade alcohol that turns into pure poison if it its for too long.
- Pee. Eskimos and various tribes in Siberia have been known to get high by drinking the urine of a person who had consumed fly agaric mushrooms.
- Music. Not to be outdone by the real world, various internet sites offer I-dosing MP3 downloads that, when listened to through stereo headphones, create a physiological effect similar to getting high (they also have versions for prayer, meditation, and sex).
